Communicative approach in Dutch practice
Dentists who have trained outside the Netherlands encounter more than just language problems here. They also have to address their communicative role in typical Dutch (health care) culture. Cultural expectations that these dentists bring from their countries of origin are not always met in the Netherlands. This often leads to misunderstandings between dentist and patient, dentist and assistants, or dentist and other professionals in the practice.
Therefore, gaining insights into each other’s cultures – without losing sight of one’s own identity and core values – is extremely valuable.
